St. Macrina Delegature, Brazil
Encouraged by Cardinal Josyf Slipyj and Bishop Joseph Martinec, the Basilian Sisters began their mission in Brazil in 1972. Mother Eusebia Bilas and Sisters Ana Zapaia and Estefania Kosteski initiated catechesis, Ukrainian language, and church music instruction in Canoinhas.
After Mother Eusebia’s death in 1973, the mission continued with more Sisters joining from Argentina and the U.S. Their work inspired local vocations and led to the establishment of Saint Basil Monastery in Curitiba (1977) and educational initiatives, including a preschool and boarding houses for girls. In 2001, the mission became the Saint Macrina Delegature.
The Sisters serve in catechesis, child care, hospital ministry, elderly visits, liturgical services, and the preservation of Ukrainian traditions. They offer religious instruction and cultural education to hundreds of youth, especially in remote areas. Despite difficulties, the Sisters continue their joyful, faithful mission, nurturing the Byzantine Catholic faith and identity in Brazil.
