On May 1, 2025, after grave health problems Sister Olha Lajun, OSBM, from St. Michael Archangel Province, Osijek, Croatia, went to be with the Lord.
On May 1, 2025, Sister Olha Lajun, OSBM, passed away at the age of 106, after 90 years of monastic life. Born Maria Lajun in 1919 in Ruski Komarivtsi, Ukraine, she and her sister were placed in a Basilian Sisters’ orphanage after their father’s death. Inspired by the Sisters, Maria entered the novitiate in 1936, receiving the name Sr. Olha. She studied and taught in various church schools, and later earned a biology degree in Hungary. In 1944, she professed her Perpetual Vows. Following the Soviet suppression of religious communities, she continued monastic life in secret while working as a teacher. Sr. Olha was part of the underground monastery in Mukachevo and later lived in the Holy Family Monastery in Khust, the former orphanage gifted by Fr. Augustine Voloshyn. Her life of deep faith and perseverance amidst persecution remains an inspiring example of fidelity to God and service to others. Eternal memory!
