Mother of God Province, Prešov, Slovakia

The Basilian Sisters arrived in Prešov, Slovakia, from Stanislav, Ukraine, in 1922, invited by Most Rev. Dr. Mikuláš Rusnák. With support from Bishops Gojdič and Nyáradi, they opened a dormitory for girls and expanded to several towns, focusing on education and youth ministry.

In 1945, they served Slovak-speaking Greek Catholics in Sečovce. Under communism in 1950, the Sisters were arrested, deported, and forced into labor, yet remained faithful. During the 1968–69 liberalization, vocations increased, and new communities were formed despite surveillance. After the 1989 Velvet Revolution, they returned to Slovakia, reopening communities and renewing their spiritual life with U.S. support. In 1994, the Delegature of St. Cyril and Methodius was founded and became a Vice Province in 2001.

Today, the Sisters serve in education, catechesis, youth and Romi ministry, healthcare, liturgical arts, and charitable outreach, continuing their mission through prayer, service, and cultural preservation.
