The Gift of Helping with Food
The Jesus, Lover of Humanity Province in the United States started St. Basil Support Ministry to fight hunger in their area, especially among Ukraine immigrants.
They distribute food weekly to those in need, regardless of background.
Sister Monica Lesnick, OSBM, was interviewed because she is working on this project:
- What does it mean to you to live the Gospel by serving food to those most in need and building bridges of hope?
The joy of rescuing food and giving it to those in need is truly heartwarming! Giving is always more gratifying than receiving, especially when we see such gratitude and renewed hope in the eyes of the receivers!
- Do you remember any words of Saint Basil that inspire your service?
St. Basil, who established the first formal soup kitchen (among many other ministries), refused to discriminate against anyone when it came to people who needed help, saying that “the digestive system of the Jew and the Christian are indistinguishable.”
- What sustains you when you feel tired or helpless because you can’t help everyone?
Knowing that the Lord enables us to do all that we do always fills my heart with peace. He ALWAYS somehow provides enough food to feed everyone – sometimes He seems to multiply 5 loaves and 2 fishes into enough to feed a huge crowd, and that sense of awe never allows me to feel tired…
- What would you say to young women who feel the desire to serve, but don’t know how to begin?
After praying much, trusting in the Lord is the secret to a sense of great peace. He will always send you signs of what He wants you to do, but you must carefully listen to Him speaking to you through those around you who need your help…
