St. Michael the Archangel Province, Osijek, Croatia
The Basilian Sisters from Slovita, Ukraine, began their mission in Križevci, Croatia, in 1915, serving Ruthenian and Ukrainian Catholics.
In 1920, Bishop Dionysius Njaradi invited them to Šid, Serbia, where they cared for orphans, forming the foundation of the Province of Saint Michael the Archangel. Before World War II, they ran schools and dormitories in Šid, Mikluševci, and Osijek, but wartime forced closures. The Sisters endured persecution and adapted by working in agriculture and hospitals. During the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, their missions suffered damage but were later restored.
In 1992, they extended their ministry to Kyiv, Ukraine. Rooted in monastic life, the Sisters serve in education, pastoral care, and manual work. Key ministries include kindergartens, catechesis, liturgical service, nursing, vestment making, and youth outreach across Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Zagreb, Vukovar, and Kyiv. Despite hardships, they remain faithful, praying for vocations and trusting in God’s providence.
