Christ the King Province, Argentina

In 1939 two Basilian Sisters from Ukraine – Mother Sophronia Erdeli and Mother Margareta Fendyo – arrived in Argentina to serve Ukrainian Greek Catholics. Settling in Apostoles, Misiones Province, they began pastoral and catechetical work, especially among children in remote rural “colonies.”

In 1940 a novitiate was opened. Sisters from Europe also joined this community, as they could not return to Ukraine due to World War II.

The Basilian Sisters’ ministry expanded to Berisso, Posadas, Buenos Aires, and Bowen, where they operated schools and taught catechism. During the centralization of the Order, Christ the King Province was established in Argentina. Sisters from Argentina also helped establish new branches of the Order in Australia (1967) and Brazil (1973).

Today, the Sisters run four schools with over 4,300 students, teach catechism, Ukrainian language and culture, conduct pastoral ministry, and care for the elderly. Staying true to their Basilian roots, they maintain their Basilian identity.
