Dormition of the Mother of God Mission, Máriapócs, Hungary
The Basilian Sisters arrived in Hungary from Uzhorod (Ukraine) in 1935, founding a monastery and novitiate in Máriapócs. They cared for the shrine, supported pilgrims, worked with youth, and opened schools and orphanages. In 1950, under communist rule, the community was disbanded, and Sisters were forced into secular life, enduring surveillance and persecution. Despite hardships, some continued serving discreetly. After the fall of communism, the Sisters returned to Máriapócs, restoring community life and service.
Today, Basilian Sisters serve in Máriapócs, Budapest and Nyíregyháza. Their ministries include shrine care, sacristy duties, religious education, translation, and parish pastoral work. They run Saint Macrina Nursing Home for the elderly. Prayer is central to their daily life, especially during pilgrimages like the Feast of the Dormition in August. Through prayer, service, and witness, the Sisters bring compassion, charity, and spiritual care to the faithful, continuing their mission with joy and dedication.
