Dormition of the Mother of God Mission, Máriapócs, Hungary

The Basilian Sisters arrived in Hungary from Uzhhorod (Ukraine) in 1935, founding a monastery and novitiate in Máriapócs. Before World War II, the Sisters served in Máriapócs, Nyíregyháza, and Budapest. They cared for the shrine, assisted pilgrims, and worked with children and youth.

In 1950, after the establishment of communist rule in Hungary, the community was dissolved. Twenty-four Sisters and four novices were forced to leave their monasteries. The General Superior, Mother Christopher Malcovsky, OSBM visited Hungary for the first time in 1975. That same year, a decree was issued establishing the Delegature of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Hungary.

After the political changes of 1989, the Sisters regained their monastery in Máriapócs from the Hungarian state. In 1993 they opened the House of St. Macrina for elderly women. In recent decades, besides Máriapócs, the Sisters have also worked in the cities of Nyíregyháza, Sátoraljaújhely, and Hajdúdorog.

Today, there are two Basilian Sisters in Hungary, living in the home for the elderly in Máriapócs. Through prayer and witness, the Sisters provide spiritual support to the residents and staff of the house.
